A new behavioral health emergency center is opening in Sumter as part of Prisma Health’s Tuomey Hospital.
The new $9.1 million unit is designed to help with the immediate stabilization and treatment for those experiencing behavioral health or substance use issues in the area.
The new center was funded as part of $45.5 million given as part of the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ new behavioral health crisis stabilization grant program.
The grant program was created to provide quicker care and reduce hospital psychiatric admissions by creating a safe and therapeutic environment for patients.
“This new partnership with Tuomey Hospital will ensure patients receive the care they need, when they need it, and in the appropriate setting. I am grateful this new unit will allow us to serve those needs right here in Sumter,” Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives Murrell Smith said in a statement.
