75 years of scouting: Sumterite Bobby Barnes receives Order of Palmetto

The community came together Saturday night, March 21, to celebrate Bobby Barnes, 89, and his many years of dedication to scouting.

The event was held at American Legion Post 15 and included food, fellowship and time for people to share memories. Friends, family and former scouts told stories about how Barnes impacted their lives and helped guide them through scouting.

“Being trustworthy and loyal is something he always taught us,” a former scout shared.

A timeline of Barnes’ life was also presented, showing his journey from his early days in

scouting to more than 75 years of service. Many former scouts spoke about how much he meant to them and the lessons he taught along the way.

“It shows how much Bobby meant to them” one attendee said, noting that family and friends even traveled from Colorado to celebrate the occasion.

During the ceremony, South Carolina House Speaker Murrell Smith presented Barnes with the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor in the state. He will also receive the Silver Antelope Award in May in Dallas, recognized as Scouting’s second-highest honor.

Barnes is the first person from the Pee Dee area to receive the Silver Antelope since 1968.

“It’s a big honor, and it brings back a lot of good memories and friendships over the years,” Barnes said.

In addition, Barnes was given a 75-year Scouting Veteran Pin to recognize his long commitment and service. The program was led by John Nesbitt, with Paul James Docherty Jr., an Eagle Scout and Sea Explorer, also taking part in the event.

His advice for future scouts is simple: “Give back to somebody who gives to you.”

Overall, the night was not just about awards but about celebrating a lifetime of service and the many people Bobby Barnes has influenced through scouting.
